Cher has slammed her daughter-in-law, Marieangela King-Allman, in a new court filing asking that the 39-year-old be prohibited from taking charge of her husband Elijah Blue Allman’s guardianship.

The legendary singer’s youngest son, whom she welcomed with her ex-husband, Gregg Allman, has suffered from poor mental health and financial issues in recent years, and currently resides at a psychiatric hospital in New Hampshire.

Cher reportedly has a strained relationship with her son

Cher and her team filed a response to Marieangela’s request to oversee Elijah’s conservatorship on August 28, just days before he was set to appear in court. “The New Hampshire State Hospital and the rest of the family remain adamantly opposed to Mrs King-Allman serving given her estrangement from Elijah,” the statement began.

“As evidenced by the previously pending divorce, her refusal and failure to assist Elijah and [family friend] Kayti Pease while he was struggling before he was arrested in New Hampshire, and/or because the family believes that she is inserting herself back into the picture on a quest for money and/or a bit of fame.”

Marieangela is requesting to become Elijah’s guardian

“Mr Allman’s condition was not unknown to her, as Kayti Pease had repeatedly and often requested that Mrs King-Allman assist her in providing care for Mr Allman,” the statement continued.

“Mrs King-Allman never lifted a finger to help, despite the fact that Mr Allman was supposedly her spouse. Now that a conservatorship is pending, Mrs King-Allman clearly sees a financial opportunity to control his income, and she has attempted to seize the opportunity created by his incarceration to try to reinsert herself back into his life.”

The statement concluded: “Whether Mr Allman ultimately chooses to be in a relationship with Mrs King-Allman is a choice he will hopefully be able to make independently, but given her behavior and indifference to his health and living situation over the prior year, she, in no way, should ever be considered as a viable candidate to serve as a court-appointed fiduciary.”

Cher previously attempted to have her son Chaz Bono and Gregg’s son Devon Allman appointed as guardians for Elijah, and he was set to appear in court on September 1 while the authorities determined if Marieangela was fit to serve as his guardian. He failed to appear in court, and the matter was pushed back to December 1.

Elijah and Marieangela have been married since 2013

Marieangela and Elijah have been in an on-and-off-again marriage since 2013. She filed for divorce in 2021, but this was dismissed in February 2024, prompting her to file again in April 2025, but it was dismissed again in June 2026.

She claimed in a statement about the ongoing legal battle that Cher was estranged from her son and did not have his best interests at heart. “As Elijah’s wife of 13 years, I love him and want what is best for him, which is a robust and long-term treatment plan,” she said.

“My husband and his mother have been estranged for many years, and she has repeatedly blocked my efforts to get him help. If she is in control of who becomes conservator, I believe it would jeopardize his chances of a hopeful recovery.”

Elijah has battled addiction for several years, and Cher filed for conservatorship over the 50-year-old in 2023 before being denied by the court. He was arrested for assault and trespassing in February 2026, and again just two days later for burglary and breach of bail.
