There are few materials as iconic as denim. It doesn’t play by the rules; raw or faded, timeless silhouettes or trendier cuts, soft finishes or structured, denim’s versatility knows no bounds. But what if I told you that this material’s icon status transcends fashion, and is currently staking its claim in the realm of beauty?
The brand to thank for that is Chanel, which is taking the kaleidoscopic spirit of denim one step further in its new makeup collection. The material has been given a whole new expression in the form of vibrant cobalt eyeshadows, cerulean highlighters, pearly lipsticks, metallic eyeliners and statement mascara.
Chanel’s denim beauty campaign is fronted by Lily-Rose Depp, ambassador for the French fashion house, by virtue of her embodying the sense of creative freedom that inspired the collection. Denim isn’t just something the actress, 26, wears, Chanel says, but something that’s woven into every aspect of her life.
Denim is no longer confined to the weave of a garment, and is now lending its cool vernacular to this spring’s most innovative beauty looks.
If you get your hands on the new beauty line, here are two Chanel-approved ways to wear denim makeup this spring…
Look 1: Lived-in radiance
Complexion
To bring a wash of light to your makeup, apply the Coco Denim Exclusive Creation to the tops of your cheekbones, bridge of your nose and brow bone using the Precision Powder Brush N°107. Blend in circular, upward motions to create a sense of soft, lived-in radiance.
Eyes
For soft radiance on the eyes, you want to recreate the lived-in texture of washed denim, which means omitting sharp precision. Begin by sweeping the silver shade from the Les 4 Ombres Coco Jean palette across your full eyelid to establish a luminous base. Next, use the Eye-Contouring Brush N°203 to place the blue shade at the inner and outer corners, working the pigment along the lower edge to frame your gaze. Gently blend both tones together with the Rounded Eyeshadow Brush N°204 until you achieve a smoky finish.
Then, define your upper lash line with Stylo Yeux Waterproof 38 Bleu Métal, dragging the product outward before blurring the edges. Finish the look with Noir Allure 97 Indigo mascara on both your top and bottom lashes to add a tonal depth. If you want further illumination, add a touch more of the silver eyeshadow onto the centre of your eyelid.
Lips
To continue emulating the lived-in texture of denim, press Rouge Coco Flash 286 in Washed Beige into your lips, which is a universal nude. The formula is silky and intensely hydrating, featuring a blend of fine oils selected for their ability to reflect light.
Nails
Two coats of Le Vernis 419 Légende on your nails will finish this look, with the polish enriched with naturally-derived ingredients developed especially for Chanel.
Look 2: Ethereal
Complexion
The Coco Denim Exclusive Creation is always a good idea when it comes to creating an ethereal makeup look. Pack it on the Precision Powder Brush N°107, and then sweep it across the high points of your face, such as cheekbones, nose bridge and brow bone. Your goal here is to achieve a weightless radiance that emanates from within, catching the light with movement.
Eyes
For ethereal eyeshadow, the base has to be a wash of translucent colour. Apply Shade 3 from the Les 4 Ombres Denim Dream Exclusive Creation across your entire eyelid to establish luminosity. Then, define your gaze by placing the dark blue shade along the edge of the upper lid, blending gently with the Eye-Contouring Brush N°203. To heighten the celestial feel, apply the pink shade to the inner half of your eyelid and tap the glistening white hue into the crease. Blend carefully where the pigments meet so they melt into one another, as nothing says ethereal quite like a seamless flow of colour.
For a graphic edge, line your upper and lower water lines with Stylo Yeux Waterproof 38 Bleu Métal. Then, draw a crisp line of Stylo Yeux Waterproof 98 Bleu Twill on the upper lid, starting from the outer corner, before adding a parallel stroke of Bleu Métal for an inky finish. Complete the look with Noir Allure 97 Indigo mascara on both your top and bottom lashes.
Lips
A soft, blurred lip will provide an airy contrast to your structured eye. Apply Rouge Coco Flash 284 Baby Blue, tapping the product around the edges of your mouth with your fingertips to create a diffused, dreamlike finish.
Nails
Again, two coats of Le Vernis 419 Légende on your fingernails is the best way to tie this denim-inspired look together.
