Connie Chung may have âunderestimated (her) talent and overestimated (her) sexinessâ in her new memoir, but her readers havenât.
On the Dec. 3 episode of the Celebrity Memoir Book Club podcast, hosted by New York comedians Ashley Hamilton and Claire Parker, the duo recounted a funny moment from Chungâs time on former Senator George McGovernâs campaign trail, as detailed in Connie.
Chung was âpart of this gang of reportersâ following McGovern around the country, Hamilton said, and one night, she decided to call her boyfriend from a phone booth. Thatâs when two other reporters come sprinting up to the phone booth.
They were trying to talk to her about something, but â considering she was one of the only women reporters around â Chung took their approach as sexual harassment.
âTheyâre, like, sexually harassing her,â Parker said. âSo she yanks their flies down and walks away to humiliate them.â
But Chung, being the legendary journalist she is, did extensive research for this memoir, Parker said. In the process of interviewing anyone âwho had ever known her,â Chung found out the incident had nothing to do with her looks or being the only woman.
âThe reason they were banging on her pay phone booth was because they thought she was getting another scoop,â Parker said. âBecause she was known to work earlier and later than everybody.â
âAnd they were like, âoh, we canât lose another one to Connie,'â Parker continued.
Chung found out, the other reporters were trying to distract her so they could get the story themselves.
âAnd she was like, âI guess I underestimated my talent and overestimated my sexiness,'â Parker said, adding that the tenacious reporter felt she âhad to fendâ for herself.

Hamilton and Parker noted that while her methods might have been a bit unconventional at times, Chung âheld her own and she was respected as one of the guys.â
âAnyone who knew anything knew she was the best,â Parker said.
