From the moment Caroline Jones gave birth to her first child, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist made a promise to herself to always lead with her truth.

“I think there comes a point in your life where telling the truth is actually freeing as opposed to the safety of keeping the secret,” Jones, 34, tells PEOPLE mere hours before heading back out on tour as a member of the Zac Brown Band — this time with her 18-month-old son Declan in tow.

“When I made the decision to start a family, there was a lot of work that I wanted to do on myself. [Being a parent] just makes you a person with more wisdom and compassion and grace. So, I’ve started to be really intentional about what kind of messages and truths I want to tell in my music.”

And one of those truths is now revealed within the somewhat troubling lyrics of the “Come In (But Don’t Make Yourself Comfortable)” hitmaker’s brand new song “No Tellin.’”

“It’s a song about the moral courage that it takes to tell a really hard, ugly truth,” Jones says of the bluegrass-infused tune, premiering exclusively on PEOPLE. “It stemmed from an experience that I had when I was younger of an unhealthy relationship that I was in that I didn’t even really fully realize until many years later.”

And while the song she penned alongside fellow songwriters Lauren McLamb and Clara Park skirts some of the details of Jones’ prior relationship, she said all one needs to know is in the song.

“Every detail that is important and honest is in the song because the details are really emotional,” explains Jones. “There are obviously circumstantial details, but the whole story is in the song. The real crux of the song is in the bridge part, about wanting to tell the truth so that what happened to you doesn’t happen to someone else.”

It’s all those others that have experienced a similar situation that ultimately made Jones wants to co-write “No Tellin’” in the first place.

“I have been hearing so many other women’s experiences and stories, and it seemed like it just kept coming up for me,” says Jones, who signed a record deal with Big Machine last year after spending over a decade as an independent artist. “I wanted to write a song that was really empowering for everyone who go through different types of abuse and unhealthy situations. My genuine hope is that the song goes out into the world and reaches the people who need to hear it. I know there are a lot of us.”

Granted, Jones admits that releasing such an honest song comes with its fair share of trepidations.

“It’s always scary, but you realize that so many people have gone through different kinds of hardships in their life, that it really bonds us all as humans,” explains Jones. “In my life, I’ve had that experience of telling really hard truths to people that I love and it being really difficult, but it also being something that has made all my relationships so much richer and so much deeper and has made me so much freer. I’m at a point in my artistry where I really know who I am.”

The New York City native also knows that, as a mom, she’s a tiny bit scared to see what life is going to be like out on tour with a little one.

“We took the bunks out on one side, and we made a custom crib,” laughs Jones of her baby-proofed tour bus. “I’m curious for the first few nights if he’s going to wonder what the heck is going on. It’s going to be an adventure.”
