How did Carol Burnett and Julie Andrews first meet?

During an appearance on Good Hang with Amy Poehler, Carol opened up about her friendship with Julie, 90. The two met while both performing on Broadway – Carol as Princess Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress and Julie as Queen Guenevre in Camelot. Their friendship quickly took off, with Carol calling Julie “my chum” and saying: “We love each other, we are like – we’re sisters.”

Their funny friendship

“We went to a Chinese restaurant together,” Carol told Amy Poehler. “And we never stopped talking to each other. It was as if we were joined at the hip from the beginning.”

After Amy asked Carol if she remembered where she was when The Sound of Music premiered, the Palm Royale actress made a revelation about her friend. To the world, Julie was the poised Maria and the magical Mary Poppins. But to Carol, she was the friend who taught her “dirty words.”

“I remember she used to send me dirty limericks when she was filming,” Carol explained. “[Julie] did a whole parody on ‘My Favorite Things.’ I mean, brilliant.”

Did Carol and Julie ever work together?

Throughout their careers, Julie and Carol were collaborators. In 1962, they worked together on the Emmy-winning Julie and Carol at Carnegie Hall. A decade later, they both starred in Lincoln Center and in 1989, they partnered up on Together Again.

“She’s wonderful to work with, and she’s loyal and kind, and it’s never changed,” Julie said of her friend to People in 2023. “It isn’t that we speak every day to be truthful. But it’s the kind of friendship that the minute you meet up again, it’s exactly as it was.”

They both share fond words for each other

Julie continued: “[Carol] transcended a very tough childhood by finding the gift of laughter and she used that phenomenal gift of comedy to save herself and to make all of us much happier. Sometimes, the characters she plays are not that loving, but she makes them so real. The humor is what is so brave, I think. Hugely brave.”

A friendship lasting a lifetime

For Carol’s 90th birthday celebration in 2023, Julie traveled across the United States to honor her chum. Amy was also at the party and watched on as Julie and Carol held hands during most of the evening. The iconic actresses are so close that the Mary Poppins star even named Carol godmother to her daughter Emma.

“She’s always available, always open, and generous. I don’t know anybody that doesn’t respect her as I do, because she’s rock solid as a friend, believe me. There’s been massive laughter between us and I become more bad and she eggs me on. But it’s a lovely friendship.”

May we all find a friend to stick by us and make us laugh for 65 years!
