Camila Cabello Says Her Hair is ‘Going to Take a Lot of Time to Rebuild’ After Going Platinum

Camila Cabello is looking back on her decision to go blonde.

During a conversation with Dave Grutman the Tribeca Festival at Art Basel Miami Beach Live Conversation with Camila Cabello event at the Miami Beach Bandshell on Dec. 8, the ‘Havana’ singer reflected on her experience with platinum hair. Cabello, who is currently sporting dark brunette locks, went blonde earlier in 2024.

“I did love being blonde in the beginning. In the beginning,” said the star, who was present to support her new album C, XOXO. “But that s*** starts looking like rope real quick — like a horse is about to take a bite, like a salad. It starts drying.”

Cabello, whose known for her ultra-dark locks, says she didn’t know that she couldn’t constantly touch up the color, so therefore, going blonde would only be feasible for a few months.

The singer, 27, also shared that she wished someone had told her about the harmful effects of long-term bleaching on dark hair like hers.

“There’s a three-shade maximum, so you can either go three shades lighter or three shades darker, and that’s fine for your hair. Any more than that, you can’t do for more than a few months. It fries it,” she said, adding, “It’s going to take a long time to rebuild my beautiful, beautiful hair.”

When Cabello initially went platinum, she concealed the hair under a wig until her big reveal. That “was painful” she told Grutman. As to the state of her hair now, when asserted her hair “looks great now” she replied, “It’s a lot of tricks! But, it was fun.”

The former Fifth Harmony member originally revealed her platinum hair on Feb. 1. Her hair colorist, Nikki Lee, shared some insight with E! News on the singer’s big change.

“Camila wanted a big moment for 2024, and what bigger moment than her going platinum blonde?” Lee said. “A color she has never been before. Our promise to each other was we could do it, but only if we kept her hair as healthy as possible.”

Lee said Cabello’s new hair required three appointments to complete, she said.

Cabello later debuted another major change — a wispy shoulder-length bob with side bangs — during Paris Fashion Week at the end of September.
