Outlander’s eighth and final season premiered on Friday, March 6, 2026. And, according to the historical fantasy’s star, Caitriona Balfe, something very “shocking” happens in the first episode.

The 46-year-old Irish actress who has starred as the time-traveling healer Claire Fraser in Outlander for over a decade sat down with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live with Kelly and Mark on Friday, March 6, 2026 to tease what fans can expect from the highly anticipated 10-episode endgame.

“I can’t say much [about the final season],” Caitriona said, before dropping a major hint: “[Claire] does something very shocking, but if you understand what a mother would do then it sort of makes sense.”

While fans have long hoped for a peaceful resolution for the star-crossed lovers, Caitriona was quick to temper those expectations.

“There are a lot of reunions. I would like to say that Claire and Jamie kick up their heels and relax with a cocktail on the porch, but it’s Outlander so that never happens,” she joked.

The premiere immediately proved her point, thrusting the couple into a dark mystery regarding their long-lost daughter, Faith.

When did Outlander premiere?

Outlander premiered on August 9, 2014, and followed a British Army nurse in World War II who is suddenly transported to 1743 where her freedom and life are threatened. The show was based on a book series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon.

Caitriona has been the beating heart of Outlander for 12 years. “How do you say goodbye after all this time?” the actress asked Kelly and Mark.
