Outlanderâs eighth and final season premiered on Friday, March 6, 2026. And, according to the historical fantasyâs star, Caitriona Balfe, something very âshockingâ happens in the first episode.
The 46-year-old Irish actress who has starred as the time-traveling healer Claire Fraser in Outlander for over a decade sat down with Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos on Live with Kelly and Mark on Friday, March 6, 2026 to tease what fans can expect from the highly anticipated 10-episode endgame.
âI canât say much [about the final season],â Caitriona said, before dropping a major hint: â[Claire] does something very shocking, but if you understand what a mother would do then it sort of makes sense.â
While fans have long hoped for a peaceful resolution for the star-crossed lovers, Caitriona was quick to temper those expectations.
âThere are a lot of reunions. I would like to say that Claire and Jamie kick up their heels and relax with a cocktail on the porch, but itâs Outlander so that never happens,â she joked.
The premiere immediately proved her point, thrusting the couple into a dark mystery regarding their long-lost daughter, Faith.
When did Outlander premiere?
Outlander premiered on August 9, 2014, and followed a British Army nurse in World War II who is suddenly transported to 1743 where her freedom and life are threatened. The show was based on a book series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon.
Caitriona has been the beating heart of Outlander for 12 years. âHow do you say goodbye after all this time?â the actress asked Kelly and Mark.Â
Fan reactions to Outlander season 8 â spoilers below!
After the first episode of season 8 premiered on Friday, March 6, fans had big reactions. The season opens on Claire wearing a maidâs outfit while her husband Jamie questioned a smuggler. Then, Claire does something, well as Caitriona said, shocking.
To viewersâ surprise, Claire stabbed the smuggler in the back and then cursed herself for not making his death more agonizing. Just before the bloody act, the smuggler admitted to some unseemly acts.
To celebrate the final season and that shocking moment, Caitriona shared photos from the show to her 2.1 million Instagram followers. One fan commented: âThe first episode was magnificent!â
Another person commented: âYou were so fantastic in that opening scene. We felt every emotion from Claire. Equally excited and sad to see the rest of the season!â
While Caitriona seemed at ease with her Outlander journey ending, she shared an emotional message to her Instagram about her time on the show.
âI love these people so much,â the actress wrote. âItâs been the greatest ride anyone could have ever imagined. Thank you for embracing us and enveloping us with your love and passion and support. What a journey. And I couldnât have imagined sharing it with a better group of people.â
