Football fans rely on broadcasters to give them the naked truth about what’s happening on the field, but Robert Griffin III took it a step further by baring BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier’s alleged family dinner table secret during a game.
“[Bear] he told us that at the dinners, you know, sometimes they just take the clothes off and they walk around naked,” Griffin, 36, said during the fourth quarter of BYU’s September 12 game against Arizona. The broadcast was showing Bachmeier’s mother, April, cheering him on from the stands at the time.
Griffin then asked his play-by-play announcer Connor Onion, “You naked at your dinners with the family?”
“Do I have to answer that?” Onion, 31, replied.
“You don’t have to answer that because I don’t think anybody listening right now really kind of does that,” Griffin answered.
Onion left it at, “America, it’s up to your imagination,” as the duo switched back to football talk.
Bachmeier, 20, has not publicly commented on his alleged nude nourishment. Instead, he’s leading a Cougars football team that is now 3-0 and averaging 44 points per game. Bachmeier has thrown for six touchdowns so far 642 yards with only one interception.
That follows a debut season with the Cougars where he threw for more than 3,000 yards with 15 touchdowns as the team went 12-2.
Griffin’s claim about the Bachmeier family’s culinary quirks may not be as far-fetched as they sound, either. A Los Angeles Times profile on Bachmeier from when he was a standout at Murrieta Valley High School in California revealed that he and his brother, teammate Tiger Bachmeier, lived in a gated community at the top of a mountain with no cell reception and surrounded by forest.
“’We went caveman,’ Bear told the outlet. “We’re in the middle of nowhere. … Growing up, we saw mountain lions and coyotes. We saw deer being eaten by coyotes.”
Murrieta Valley coach George Wilson said of Bear, Tiger and older brother Hank that “everything is unusual about those guys. Nothing is standard.” (They also have a younger brother “called Buck, Cougar or Puma depending on the day.”)
Bear, for his part, seems thankful for his unorthodox upbringing.
“The way we grew up and our lifestyle has definitely made us able to adapt to any environment we’re in,” he said.
BYU is currently on a bye week but will return to the field fully clothed and ready to go for a fourth-straight win on October 3 against TCU.
