Brooke Shields is responding to critics of her appearance.
During a Monday, Jan. 13 appearance on Good Morning America, the actress, 59, told hosts Robin Roberts and Lara Spencer how a recent social media comment sparked discourse about aging.
âI was doing an Instagram Live the other day and one of the comments was âI really wish you looked the way you used to,'â Shields recalled. âAnd I was like, âreally?ââ
ââŠI thought, âWeâre all so out of touch,â she continued. âWe need to find joy in this.â
Shields, who is promoting her latest book Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old, also reflected on the societal pressures women face.
âThe beauty industry wants us to chase youth, we look at regrets â what if, what if,â she said. âAnd I think itâs important to understand where youâve been, but I think itâs really joyous to say, âI may not know where Iâm going but Iâm here.ââ
The star explained that while she wants to âlook my best and I want to be healthy,â sheâs not so focused on anti-aging measures. âIâve earned everything that I have on my face,â Shields said. âAnd I think itâs important to pat yourself on your back and say, âWhat do you want to do now?â
In Shieldsâ book, out Jan. 14, the star speaks candidly about topics like sex and motherhood. In one particularly shocking excerpt shared with PEOPLE, from the chapter titled âNo Longer The Punching Bag: A Plea for Self-Advocacyâ, the actress discusses the moment she discovered a medical procedure she didnât consent to.

After having a labial reduction procedure to reduce pain, Shieldsâ doctor revealed he had also given her a vaginal rejuvenation without discussing it with her prior.
She writes: âI was horrified, but also at a loss. I didnât want to sue this man â or maybe I did want to, but I didnât feel I could â because I didnât particularly want talk of my lady parts, once again, on the front page of every paper.â

Shields also says that if the same thing happened to her today, she would have a very different reaction.
âMy sentiment is basically a giant middle finger. Fâ that guy!â she continues. âHe had no right to do what he did, and if it happened to me now, I would make my own blaring headline and blast it everywhere. Thatâs what this age feels like to me, and I like it so much better.â
