Brian Setzer is giving a candid health update.
The Stray Cats guitarist, 65, penned a heartfelt note to fans on Friday, Feb. 14, revealing on Instagram and X that he was recently diagnosed with an auto-immune disease and cannot play guitar.
âHi everybody, I just wanted to check in with you all. Towards the end of the last Stray Cats tour I noticed that my hands were cramping up,â he wrote about the bandâs summer 2024 tour.
âIâve since discovered that I have an auto-immune disease. I cannot play guitar,â he revealed. Setzer described the sensation as âwearing a pair of gloves when I try to playâ and confirmed he does not have pain.
âI have seen some progress in that I can hold a pen and tie my shoes. I know this sounds ridiculous, but I was at a point where I couldnât even do that,â he shared. âLuckily, I have the best hospital in the world down the block from me. Itâs called the Mayo Clinic.âÂ
âI know I will beat this, it will just take some time,â he concluded. âI love you all, Brian.â
Several people commented on Setzerâs announcement, offering their support, including musicians Steve Vai and Chris Cheney.
Vai wrote: âBrother Brian, you are a soldier! Take your time, youâre on the mend, and we are all eager for your full recovery to optimum health. much love to you.â
âSending love , strength and healing prayers to you great man,â Cheney added. âYou were born to play and If anyone can beat this you can. đđ.â

The musician, who won a Grammy for his orchestraâs cover of âJump Jive anâ Wail,â did not specify his exact diagnosis. Cleveland Clinic describes autoimmune diseases as âhealth conditions that happen when your immune system attacks your body instead of defending it.â
There are more than 100 different autoimmune diseases, typically divided into seven categories: joints, muscles, skin, blood vessels, digestive system, endocrine system and nervous system.
