Mark Hoppus once went on a first date with Melissa Joan Hart — and he certainly didn’t want to make it last forever (and ever).

The Blink-182 rocker reveals in his new memoir Fahrenheit-182 (out April 8) that he and the Sabrina the Teenage Witch actress went on an underwhelming sushi date in the San Fernando Valley, just hours before he wound up connecting with the woman he’d go on to marry, according to an excerpt published in Entertainment Weekly.

Hoppus, 53, writes that he and Hart, 48, met at the Teen Choice Awards, and she had her publicist reach out to his label’s publicist to give him her number. While they got along fine, sparks didn’t fly.

“It was an awful date. She was very nice, but we weren’t connecting,” he writes. “Everything in her life revolved around acting and it was hard to relate to her about anything else.”

In the excerpt, the “What’s My Age Again?” singer recalls their conversation, saying that when he asked what she liked to eat, she said she usually ate whatever was catered to set. When he asked what she liked to read, she said she mostly just read scripts.

“I’m sure from her perspective, all I could talk about was music,” he writes. “We just weren’t a good match. It was tough.”

After dinner, they briefly stopped at Hart’s place, though things did not turn romantic. She then dropped him off at his hotel, where he came home to a voicemail from Skye, an MTV talent executive on whom he’d long harbored a crush.

Though Skye had previously rejected his advances, she’d called and asked Hoppus to call her back. He did, and the two had a long conversation that lasted all night.

Before long, they were dating, and they tied the knot in 2000, less than a year later. They are parents to son Jack, 22.

Hart, meanwhile, married Mark Wilkerson in 2003, and they share sons Mason, 19, Braydon, 17, and Tucker, 12.

Hoppus and Skye celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary in December, with the rocker sharing a photo from their wedding day to Instagram.

“24 years! Happy Anniversary, Skye. I love you more,” he captioned his post.

In an interview with PEOPLE in 2022, Hoppus praised his wife and her support after he was diagnosed with cancer.

“She researched all the best foods, like, ‘This helps with the nausea, and this helps with the dehydration, and this helps with the recovery,’ ” he said. “My wife was awesome from day one.”

Hoppus’s new book is a funny, engaging and heartfelt reflection on everything from his childhood in the California desert and the rowdy early years of Blink-182, to the band’s trials and tribulations and eventually his battle with cancer.
