The de la Mottes have moved on from their conservative church â but some of their traditional values remain.
On the new TLC special Big Family, Big City, the family of the 13 reflected on being part of the Independent Fundamental Baptist Church for 15 years, which matriarch Amber described as âold-fashionâ and âuntouched by worldly influences.â
Her husband Marc recalled the church having âa lot of rules,â and Amber pointed out: âWomen were supposed to be quiet and subservient in every way.â
The rules included women wearing skirts below their knees and no rock music. Their son Elijah even noted, âThere was nothing with a beat. Beats were evilâŠI didnât even know about The Beatles until like recently.â
Amber admitted she felt like they were âbrainwashed members of a cult,â adding, âIt took a long time for us to figure that out.âÂ
âItâs kind of like the frog in the kettle,â Marc explained. âYou know, you donât realize the water is getting hot until youâre boiling.âÂ
With their move to New York, the family was âtrying to find their own wayâ and start fresh, having ânew experiences within reason.â However, they hadnât forgotten traditional values when it comes to dating.
After the coupleâs oldest daughter Pearl nervously revealed that she was in a relationship with her first boyfriend Adam â who she had yet to kiss â to her parents, Amber explained, âWe donât approve of just dating just for the sake of dating because itâs fun. We believe in dating with a goal in mind, and that goal is marriage.â
The pair later laid out their rules for dating, which Marc called âpretty simple.â The couple then listed off the rules including: âDonât text too much. No spending a lot of time together alone. No kissing.â
âWeâre trying to help them not have sex before they get married,â Amber noted.
Mark admitted in a confessional, âThereâs no such thing as casual dating to us. Itâs serious. Either youâre interested in marriage or youâre not dating.âÂ
The pair wasted no time asking about Adamâs intentions with their daughter during their first meeting. âWe donât believe in just dating just for the fun of it, you know? We believe in dating for the idea of potentially marriage,â Amber said. âIs that what you believe, too?â
âYes. Definitely,â he responded. âMy parents have often told my siblings the same thing. Dating was for the purpose of marriage and sort of as God intended it.â
The couple was impressed by his response. âI may have come on a little strong meeting him for the first time, but he did really well. I think I definitely embarrassed Pearl,â Amber said, and Marc added, âTo be honest, I just wanted to grill him, but everything I said to him was like, âWait a minute, did you rehearse that?'â
âHe answers all of the questions correctly,â Amber chimed in. âHoping heâs not too good to be true.â
