Benny Blanco is a pretty good listener.
Ahead of his and his fiancée Selena Gomez’s album I Said I Love You First release, the producer and Only Murders in the Building actress discuss how the album came together for Spotify for their First Look series.
In the teaser clip, Gomez, 32, said that she and Blanco, 37, would wake up in the morning and chat as a couple, but never had a conversation that led with “what are we going to write in the album?”
“It was very, ‘this is on my mind,’ ‘what is that,’ ‘how does that make you feel?’ kind of thing,” she explained.
Blanco, meanwhile, joked about one way he’s contributed to the songwriting process. “Yeah, I felt like your personal journal,” he said, to which Gomez responded, “Well, you are!”
“I was just, constantly writing whatever you said, wherever we were,” he continued. “Sometimes you’d be saying something, like, really important, and I would — I didn’t know if you even realized — but I would open my phone and be like, ‘F—, that’s such a good line for a song.”
Gomez said that she did notice Blanco taking notes. “But I was very — you know me. I could just sit there and talk…it didn’t bother me, if that’s what you’re asking,” she added, laughing.
So far, the couple has released three songs from I Said I Love You First: “Scared of Loving You,” on Feb. 13, “Call Me When You Break Up” with Gracie Abrams on Feb. 21, and “Sunset Blvd.” on March 14.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, Gomez and Blanco, who got engaged in December 2024, shared that they’ve been more focused on releasing music than planning as of late.
“I think every day she’s planned a new wedding in her head,” Blanco told the publication. “We’re very much ‘take it one day at a time’-type of people. We’re still not over this moment. Literally, while you were talking, she was sitting there staring at her ring.”
Gomez said, “Also, I genuinely feel like this is such a special time that we get to apply it to this album and really just pour our heart into it, and completely translate what we feel and bring it to the world. That’s my main focus right now, at least.”
A press release for the upcoming album plans to give fans “a unique window into their relationship.”
“This album came together organically as a direct result of the comfort that they both felt when working together creatively, allowing them to produce art that authentically reflects their experiences,” the press release added.
