Selena Gomez and husband Benny Blanco candidly discussed managing her bipolar disorder together.
Gomez appeared on Tuesdayâs episode of Blancoâs podcast, âFriends Keep Secrets,â and in a conversation with his best friend, Lil Dicky, and Lil Dickyâs wife, Kristin Batalucco, the former Disney Channel star talked about her mental health issues.
She described getting diagnosed with bipolar disorder as âfâking complicated,â explaining that her journey included multiple therapists and four different rehabs.
Blanco, 37, jumped in and said his wife would sometimes have moments of âmaniaâ and didnât know what they were at the time.
âSheâll start to realize sheâs having it after, and sometimes she doesnât even remember when itâs happening,â he shared. âItâs such a delicate thing âcause youâre not supposed to technically talk to the person, really, about it while theyâre deep in it, and even dating her, sheâs, like, so hyper-aware.â
âSheâll be like, âI think Iâm feeling a little manic.ââ
Gomez, 33, said she wasnât ashamed of having manic episodes, and that recognizing them for what they are meant she could identify them quicker.
âBut it is helpful to have a partner that will understand where maybe the temperature is at, and meet you where you are, and then you kind of gradually understand whatâs happening,â she said of Blanco.
Gomez also shared that getting diagnosed allowed her to live life âfreely,â and that itâs helped her understand her reaction to things.
âI would act out of fear and I would act out of love, Iâd act out of passion, it was all inconsistent,â she recalled. âIt was crazy.â
The âHands to Myselfâ singer first revealed her bipolar disorder in 2020, after having a public breakdown in 2018.
Back in October 2024, she said she surrounds herself with only one or two people she trusts when sheâs having a bad mental health day.
âSometimes isolating myself when Iâm not feeling great can be scary. I think all these thoughts,â she said during an Instagram interview with influencer Rami Bader. âBut if Iâm around people that make me feel good, and make me feel like I can say anything, that always helps me.â
She told Vanity Fair in September 2024 that sheâs now been âproperly medicated,â and she also uses temperature â which can include cold water and space heaters â as a âhealing mechanismâ during physical and mental health flare-ups.
Depending on her needs, the pop star said she found varying temperatures âsoothing at different times.â
