“[The film is] dedicated to my parents because I lost both my mom and my dad this year, and they were very important to me,” he explained.

“I really wanted to show this movie to them, and I didn’t get to. I think they would have liked it.” It is unclear when Timothy passed away or what led to his death.

Ben and Casey’s mother passed away in June

The news comes just two months after the Affleck family announced the loss of matriarch Christine Affleck, who had passed away a month prior on June 2.

Christine and Timothy welcomed Ben and Casey in 1972 and 1975 before divorcing in 1984, and she stayed in Massachusetts with the boys while he moved to California.

The former couple had vastly different backgrounds, as Ben told The Hollywood Reporter in 2012.

“My mother taught public school, went to Harvard and then got her master’s there and taught fifth and sixth grade in a public school,” he explained. “My dad had a more working-class lifestyle. He didn’t go to college. He was an auto mechanic and a bartender and a janitor at Harvard.”

Timothy’s sobriety journey

After moving to California, Timothy worked at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, where he counseled people in need and wrote grant proposals.

Ben has spoken at length about his bond with his father, and shared with People how hard Timothy had worked to get sober after struggling with alcoholism for several years. He told the publication that “the principal lesson and legacy of [my dad’s] life is that he dramatically improved it”.

Ben shared that he had “tremendous” respect for his father

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for what that takes and what that means,” he continued. “Part of being an adult is learning that your parents are just people. They’re not perfect. They were just doing their best. As a child, we expect perfection out of our parents.”

“I learned to be able to look at things that I wish were different about my childhood and say [my parents] did their best. They were dealing with their own stuff and their own childhood trauma. The goal is to try and break some of these painful cycles,” Ben concluded.

Timothy explained that Hollywood had “taken a toll” on his sons

Timothy, who was an aspiring playwright, spoke to Grazia in 2018 about the darker side of Hollywood that Ben and Casey dealt with. “It has taken a toll on both of my sons,” he said.

“Hollywood is a disgusting place. I think that’s been a major factor in Ben’s drinking. You’re kind of forced to develop a persona that is hard to shed and go home to your family. It affects your whole life. I think that’s one of the dangers of the film industry.”

He added that his sons were “hard workers” with “a tremendous amount of empathy”.

“They don’t forget where they came from; they’re very kind and generous. Those are the qualities that I value.”
