Grant Ellis knew what he was in for as he stepped in as the lead of The Bachelor season 29 — but that doesn’t mean it was without its heartache.

During an appearance on Good Morning America, the 31-year-old dished on what fans can expect from his season of the dating series, which premieres Jan. 27. He teased that he would “come back strong” after exiting just before Hometowns on Jenn Tran’s season of The Bachelorette.

“It’s really important that you wear your heart on your sleeve and I feel I did just that,” Ellis said. “I think that will really resonate with America.”

The day trader said that the “group of women” who came to find love with him were “amazing” and “brought so much to the table.” Yet, that just made things harder when it came to saying goodbye.

“It’s really hard when you have to let somebody down in a way and that’s kind of something that hurt a little,” he said.

“The women were amazing,” he continued. “I think the thing that really brought us all together was what they were here for and that was love. I think that everybody was genuine, everybody was unique and everybody was willing to be open.”

Ellis was also careful about how he handled the women’s emotions, as he knew from his own experience just how delicate feelings can be on the show.

“You know, the inevitable has to happen [at the rose ceremony], but you can do it with grace and you can do it in a way where you’re thinking about the woman’s feelings and also thinking about yourself.”

As for his opinion on drama — which is inevitable in the Bachelor Mansion — Ellis said, “Some drama is good, not too much, but a little bit … And there’s a little bit of drama, that’s what happens when emotions are involved, but I think we come to a resolution.”

Ellis told PEOPLE he was in a “really good place” when his season began filming, despite his experiencing heartbreak after leaving Tran’s season.

“I was ready,” he said after he’d spent some time focusing on work, family and fitness. “Really intentional, that’s the word I would use. Being intentional and me healing from Jenn’s season was getting back to normal life.”

He also teased a happy ending to his story: “Without giving away too much, things ended the way they were supposed to end, and I’m happy with it. I’m happy with decisions I made, and I don’t regret anything. I’m very happy with the ending.”
