Aubrey Plaza asked for a welfare check on her late husband, Jeff Baena, months before his death.
According to the medical examinerâs report obtained by Us Weekly, Plaza, 40, said she had a friend check on Baenaâs well-being in October 2024, one month after they quietly separated. (Plaza confirmed to the examiner that she and Baena separated in September 2024.)
âBaena made concerning remarks ⊠which prompted her to call a friend to perform a welfare check on her husband,â the report read. âBaena had been attending therapy since that event.â
The report also stated that Plaza had been in contact with Baena on the day of his death, as he sent her a text message that morning.
News broke in January that Baena died by suicide after he was found unconscious inside his Los Angeles home. Baenaâs dog walker discovered his body, per the medical examinerâs report. He was 47 years old.
âThis is an unimaginable tragedy,â a spokesperson for Plaza told Us in a statement that month. âWe are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.â
Plaza and Baena dated for nearly a decade before tying the knot in 2020. While the actress has not further addressed Baenaâs death or their split, she seemingly paid homage to her late husband during an appearance at the SNL 50 anniversary special. For the occasion, Plaza donned a tie-dye T-shirt â which Baena had an affinity for â underneath her blazer.
During a December 2021 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Plaza recalled how she and Baena spent their quarantine together and detailed their impromptu decision to tie the knot.
âWe got a little bored one night. We got married and Iâll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. Thatâs real, look it up,â Plaza said at the time. âWe were in the lockdown. Things got a little crazy, especially in my house. My husband got really into tie-dying and when I say tie-dying, I mean 50 shirts a day.â
The ceremony took place in her and Baenaâs backyard.
âI created a very quick love altar in our yard. Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature,â the Parks and Recreation alum explained. âThen the man from Alhambra showed up in a Hawaiian shirt with a briefcase [to perform the ceremony]. ⊠I canât remember a lot of it, it was fuzzy. But Iâm pretty sure itâs legal.â
