ASAP Rocky isn’t holding back on his new album — especially on “Stole Ya Flow,” which seems to be a diss track aimed at Drake.
Rocky, 37, dropped his fourth studio album, Don’t Be Dumb, on Friday, January 16, and listeners quickly noticed that “Stole Ya Flow” includes numerous possible references to the Degrassi alum, 39.
“First you stole my flow, so I stole yo’ bitch,” Rocky raps on the chorus. “I can’t trust a soul, just my pole and my kids / Swear to never lie, cross my heart, hope to die, uh / Then I sold the switch, then I hit it with a kiss, mwah.”
As fans may recall, Rocky’s girlfriend, Rihanna, dated Drake off and on for years before her relationship with Rocky turned romantic. Drake famously declared his love for the “Diamonds” singer, 37, at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards while presenting her with the Video Vanguard Award.
Rihanna later said listening to his speech was “uncomfortable,” telling Vogue in 2018, “I don’t like too many compliments; I don’t like to be put on blast.” She noted that she and Drake were no longer friends, adding, “But we’re not enemies either. It is what it is.”
Later in the track, Rocky gives his girlfriend a more pointed shout-out, rapping, “Now I’m a father, my bitch badder than my toddler / My baby mama Rihanna, so we unbothered.”
The “Peso” artist also seemingly nods to Metro Boomin’s infamous “BBL Drizzy” song with the line, “N****s gettin’ BBLs, lucky we don’t body-shame.”
During the Friday episode of The New York Times’ “Popcast” podcast, Rocky played coy when asked whether “Stole Ya Flow” is about Drake, who was once his friend and collaborator. When cohost Joe Coscarelli noted that “the internet” would decide who the song was about, Rocky replied, “I think we all know.”
Asked where things went “wrong” between him and Drake, Rocky said he wasn’t sure.
“I don’t know, I started just seeing people who started out as friends and just became foes,” he explained. “Seemed like they was unhappy for you and just started sending shots. I think that’s what led to any of our misunderstandings or whatever the case is.”
After cohost Jon Caramanica asked whether the conflict feels “resolvable,” Rocky said no.
“It don’t even need to be,” he added. “Like, for what?”
When asked again whether the song is about Drake, Rocky replied, “It’s for whoever feel like it’s about them.”
The two rappers’ relationship seemingly soured a few years ago when Drake appeared to take shots at Rocky and Rihanna on his 2023 album, For All the Dogs. On the song “Fear of Heights,” Drake denied still having feelings for a woman many listeners presumed to be Rihanna before saying it was “better” for her to be with another man.
“Why they make it sound like I’m still hung up on you?” he sang. “That could never be / Gyal can’t run me / Better him than me / Better it’s not me.”
The duo’s beef continued into 2024 amid Drake’s highly publicized feud with Kendrick Lamar, with Rocky mocking Drake on the Metro Boomin and Future collaboration “Show of Hands.” Drake then shouted out Rocky by his legal name on “Family Matters,” rapping, “Rakim talkin’ s*** again.”
