Anne Hathaway says that the Southern drawl used by her character in the 2010 film Valentine’s Day was something she came up with all on her own.

In a post shared to Instagram on Wednesday, Feb. 12, Hathaway, 42, wrote, “Three movies with Garry Marshall? Color me grateful. Valentine’s Day came out FIFTEEN years ago.”

In the caption to the post, which included a clip of one of her scenes from the film, Hathaway added: “enjoy this clip (where I inexplicably decided to give the character ‘Katya’ a southern drawl 😂 ) Happy Valentine’s Sugar💘”

Hathaway’s character in the film, Liz, is a receptionist who moonlights as a phone sex operator (at times named Katya) and begins dating the office mailroom clerk Jason (played by Topher Grace).

In the clip shared by Hathaway, Liz can be seen driving a scooter while she gets a call on her cell phone from one of her clients.

“Hi,” she answers, as she clumsily knocks her helmet to the ground. “Oh, I was thinking about you all night long. Oh I’m sorry I didn’t answer on the first ring. It’s not my fault. I was thinking about what you were gonna do to me and I just couldn’t wait. I didn’t have a free hand.”

“Oh baby, you know just how Katya likes it,” she continues, adding, “Well it’s Valentine’s Day, sugar. How about something special? My roommate just got home — do you want to have a threesome?”

At that, a woman walking her dog comes up alongside Liz, saying, “If he says, ‘Yes,’ it’ll take me a minute to change.”

The film was directed by the late Marshall and had a star-studded cast, which also included Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Julia Roberts, Jamie Foxx, Jessica Alba, Bradley Cooper and many more.

The movie centered on different couples spending the Valentine’s holiday together.

In addition to Valentine’s Day, Hathaway also starred in Marshall’s The Princess Diaries films, and has said that the late director helped her make it big in the industry.

“I had no idea what I was doing. I was just doing my best,” Hathaway told ABC in 2020 of being cast in The Princess Diaries at age 18. “And Garry really crafted that performance to be the best it possibly could be. And that’s how I was introduced to the world. The Princess Diaries changed my life.”

She added: “He went out of his way to make sure that I knew why it was important to be a good person in this business. I realize that in situations when you go onto sets and things are stressful and people are freaked out and people are fighting, you can still bring the joy, ‘cause Garry taught me how to bring the joy.”
