For many millennials, Andrew Keegan is, of course, an unforgettable face. But which of his many â90s characters gets him the most recognition?
The actor says 10 Things I Hate About Youâs Joey Donner is who fans most often recognize him as, even still â 25 years after the teen rom-comâs release.
âI think the most is 10 Things I Hate About You, for sure,â Keegan, 43, tells PEOPLE while chatting at 90s Con in September in Florida. âBut the cast of 7th Heaven is here â I was on that for four seasons.â
In 1999âs 10 Things I Hate About You, Joey is more focused on his looks â and a potential modeling career â than his romantic relationship with Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik). The affluent teenâs priorities make him an enemy of the filmâs protagonist, Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles).
In several of his â90s roles, Keeganâs characters could be a bit self-serving â something he reflects on, now.

âI think as an actor we have a lot of different opportunities,â Keegan tells PEOPLE. âI think I kind of traversed back and forth. 7th Heaven is here; yes I was a single father so that was âbadâ but I watched a lot of episodes lately and the character was also very sweet. âBadâ is not a descriptive enough word. A lot of the roles were dynamic.â
And he defends 10 Thingsâ Joey as multi-dimensional: âThere was still something sweet about Joey, that lovable kind of quality that I was recognizing.â
âWe bring ourselves as actors to the roles, thereâs a little piece of us in the roles. And I think Iâm sweet.â
Filming the movie in Tacoma, Washington, was the âfirst time Iâd been on a shoot out of town,â Keegan says.
His memories of that experience are fond: âYou get to go somewhere, be all together, stay in a hotel, itâs like a work trip.â
