Alysa Liu looked worlds away from her usual alt-grunge look when she stepped out with Icelandic singer Laufey in a ’60s-inspired aesthetic, with the pair wearing matching outfits. The Olympic champion donned an orange minidress and knee-high brown boots for the occasion, before adding an orange headband, chunky orange bangles and a white beaded necklace to complete the look.

Meanwhile, Laufey sported a white crocheted minidress with white knee-high boots, a white headband, chunky white bangles and eye-catching white earrings. The dynamic duo did the opening dance to PinkPantheress’ “Stateside”, which Alysa skated to at the Winter Olympics in February.

“Welcome to the party,” Laufey wrote in the Instagram caption, prompting an outpouring of excitement from fans over their unexpected collaboration. “OKAAAYYYY,” wrote PinkPantheress in the comment section, while the official US Figure Skating account added: “You have our attention.”

“Madwoman let’s gooo,” Alysa wrote in her own Instagram post. The figure skating star has been vocal about her love of Laufey and PinkPantheress, whose songs she skated to at the Olympics.

After performing to Laufey’s “Promise”, the 2023 song shot up the charts, and the pair met at one of the singer’s live shows shortly thereafter.

“She’s like the best figure skater in the world. Do you understand what this means for my 8-year-old figure skating heart? I was so bad, but she is so incredible
an incredible athlete with an incredible story,” the Iceland native said as Alysa stood in front of the crowd.

PinkPantheress’ collaboration with Zara Larsson, “Stateside”, received a huge boost after Alysa used it in her free-skate routine and recreated some of the music video’s choreography. “I feel like she really pushed ‘Stateside’, and besides that, I was just so emotional,” Zara told fans about seeing Alysa’s performance.

“When I saw her perform, it just brought me to tears. The more I watched it, the more emotional I got. It was so inspiring just seeing her do what she love and it just felt so natural. It was really, really beautiful.”

Alysa’s ’60s-inspired look is a far cry from her self-described “alternative” style, marked by baggy clothes, piercings and eye-catching striped hair. “I love masculine style so much. I feel really comfortable in it. Off the ice, I don’t dress as feminine. To me, that is skating,” she explained to Cosmopolitan.

“I’ll wear skirts, too, but I definitely love a good masculine street style. When I am at public events, and I’m wearing my usual style, people will say, ‘Oh, I thought you were, like, a snowboarder.’ I take it as a compliment. I like throwing people off,” she added.

The 20-year-old shared with W magazine that she took style inspiration from her four siblings, Selina, Julia, Joshua and Justin. “I’m sitting here right now in my brother’s jeans. And my sisters as well – three of them are triplets, but the triplets dress so different from each other,” she told the publication.

“One of my sisters is pretty emo, a little bit punk-scene, if you will,” she continued. “And then my other sister likes the basics. She does denim-on-denim fits. I’m like, ‘Dang, you really pull that off!’ Of course, as an older sister, I give them my clothes, but in return, sometimes they’ll give me theirs. We share a lot, even though all of us have different fashion tastes.”
