Alan Cumming is dishing on this season of The Traitors.
The actor, 60, opened up to PEOPLE about hosting the competition series for a third season and all the drama that comes with the job. Calling it the most chaotic season yet, Cumming says that the traitors are constantly fighting amongst themselves, and “I just don’t understand it.”
“I mean, I started thinking Boston Rob [Mariano], you can sort of think that’s his thing,” he notes. “He’s always a bit of a s—. Danielle [Reyes], to me, I’m just like, ‘What are you doing? What are you doing?’ There’s no game. It’s just chaos. And Carolyn [Wiger] I think is just sort of a chaos sidekick. I saw her recently. She came to a viewing party at Club Cumming and I said, ‘I’m worried about you, Carolyn.’ She goes, ‘Well, I watch it all the time and I journal and I do cry a bit.’ I said, ‘Oh my God, you’re still going through it type of thing?’”
“There’s some even more juicy stuff,” he teases. “There were bits in the round tables that I actually thought I was going to have to break up a fight.”
As for how he feels about his own role on the show, Cumming says it’s like he’s playing a character, which he enjoys.
“He’s like this weird rich lord who owns a castle, but his sort of sadistic pleasure, he invites all these dopey American stars to come and play this game and has a manservant and a dog,” Cumming describes his persona on The Traitors. “The dog’s mine but I feel like I’ve made up this character and he keeps growing. Now he’s sort of a cult leader. He has all these followers. He didn’t have those in the other season. So he’s sort of a highland gaming cult leader with great fashion sense.”
“I love it and I love the way that people have reacted to it in such a positive way,” he adds. “And I love the queerness of it. Actually, I think that’s a really great thing for me. And the fact that the fashion, sort of feminineness of my fashion, is [something] everyone’s going nuts for, I think it’s really, in its own small way, is a sort of a middle finger up to all the transphobia and homophobia going on.”
The Traitors first premiered in January 2023 and quickly became a fan favorite. In September 2024, it even won an Emmy for outstanding reality competition program.
Each season has brought together a diverse group of stars. The season 3 cast ranges from The Bachelor‘s Wells Adams and Gabby Windey to Bravo’s Tom Sandoval, Chanel Ayan, Dolores Catania, Robyn Dixon and Dorinda Medley.
Chrishell Stause, Britney Spears’ ex Sam Asghari, Bob the Drag Queen, Dylan Efron, Nikki Garcia, Mariano and Lord Ivar Mountbatten are also participants, along with Big Brother’s Reyes and Britney Haynes, Summer House’s Ciara Miller and The Biggest Loser‘s Bob Harper.
Several Survivor stars entered the competition as well, including Carolyn Wiger, Tony Vlachos and Jeremy Collins.
