Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win Best Director for her film The Hurt Locker, which also won Best Picture. The story takes place during the second war in Iraq, as Jeremy Renner plays Sergeant First Class William James, a bomb disposal expert who treats the everyday dangers of insurgents and explosive devices as his canvas.
No one is denying that James is good at his job, but Sergeant J. T. Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) quickly comes to hate his lackadaisical approach to safety, which may get him killed. Sanborn wouldn’t shed any tears over James’ death, but his life is also on the line in these situations. If they can’t get on the same page, then they may never leave this country alive.
The Hurt Locker is streaming on Netflix through March 31.
